A KMZ is a ZIP archive holding one KML file, usually named doc.kml, plus any icons, overlay images or 3D models it references. This viewer lists every entry it finds so you can see exactly what the archive contains before anything is drawn.
Because it is compressed binary, not text. Renaming it to .zip and extracting it gives you the KML inside, which is plain XML. This viewer does that step for you.
Google My Maps can import KMZ, but it caps file size and feature count and needs a Google account. Opening it here has no limits of that kind and requires no sign-in.
